Viterbo University
9:30-10:50 am in RC 127 or
3:30-5:00 pm in RC 12

You are invited to attend presentation on Immigration Backlash
presented by Casey Sanchez, investigative reporter with the Southern
Poverty Law Center. Casey will be on the Viterbo campus Thursday
February 14 and a number of opportunities exist for you and your
students to hear Mr. Sanchez speak on this important social justice
issue.

Casey will talk about the more than 100 nativist extremist groups have
formed in the US over the past three years. Mr. Sanchez’s presentation
will look at the tactics used by the hard-liners of the anti-immigrant
movement. Many have moved beyond targeting policy to targeting
immigrants themselves.

Casey Sanchez is a staff writer at The Intelligence Report, a quarterly
magazine published by the Southern Poverty Law Center that monitors
hate and extremist activity in the US. In 2007, the magazine was named
the best “In-Depth/Investigative Reporting” periodical by the Utne

Movie: "Dias de Santiago"
Synopsis:
Santiago Roman, a rugged, 23-year-old soldier of the Peruvian Navy, returns home to Lima after years of fighting in the jungle. Combat-weary and searching for hope, Santiago is a member of a lost Peruvian generation – his spirit scared by futile wars with Ecuador and constant fighting against terrorists and drug traffickers. He quickly finds his native Lima an unwelcoming place – his army buddies have taken to bankrobbing, the decadent club scene offers only noise and lights; prospective employers won’t hire him, his applications for credit are refused. But worst of all, Santiago learns that his friends, family and his young, professional wife have become decadent or distant – and that they are, each in another way, unable to understand him. As his troubles converge in the film’s riveting climax, Dias de Santiago asks the question of escape for a discharged soldier, who returns home full of hope, but finds only disappointment and inner turmoil.

La Vida y la pasión (Life & Passion) Film Series
Tuesday, February 26
Film: Y tu mamá también (México)
7:00 p.m., 156 Cowley, UWL

The lives of Julio and Tenoch, like the lives of most seventeen-year old boys, are controlled by their hormones, their friendship, and by their headlong rush into adulthood.
During a festive afternoon with their families, they meet Luisa, a twenty-eight year old Spaniard, and flirt with her with all the style and grace seventeen-year old boys are known for. As a joke, they invite her to accompany them on a road trip to a beach called Boca del Cielo ("Heaven's Mouth"), neglecting to mention that they wouldn't know where to find it, even if it did actually exist. Luisa humors the boys, they go their separate ways, and the incident is quickly forgotten.
Luisa, however, receives some heartbreaking news, and in need of a change in her environment, tracks the boys down and accepts their offer. The three hit the road together, their destination not so much Boca del Cielo, but that strange, elusive place in our lives where innocence, sexuality, and friendship collide, and adulthood lies in wait to pick up the pieces.
